Joana Amendoeira

Joana / Biography

Joana Amendoeira is considered one of the most important singers of the “New Generation”. In her singing, Fado wins new glow, new attitude, without deviating from tradition.

Born in Santarém (Ribatejo), a Portuguese region with great tradition in Fado, Joana soon discovered the appeal to sing Fado and, at age of 12, had the first prize at “Grande Noite do Fado do Porto”.

Throughout Joana’s career she had the opportunity to perform in the best Lisbon’s Fado Houses (Clube de Fado and Sr.Vinho) and learn from elderly Fado singers and guitar players. They all recognize her special voice, her attitude, her talent and kindly passed to her their skills, poetry and live stories. The latest album «Amor mais perfeito» (2012) is a special tribute to one of her masters, the composer and Portuguese guitar player, José Fontes Rocha.

Her career includes eight albums, many prizes, included the Best Album 2008, a special distinction  of Amalia Rodrigues Foundation, showcases at world trade fairs such as Mercat de Musica Viva de Vic 2003 and Strictly Mundial 2005 and many tours in countries such as Spain, Italy, Hungary, Lithuania, Sweden, Brazil, Argentina, USA, India and Japan, among others.

Joana proudly defends Fado legacy without ever forgetting her own artistic expression.
